  Certificate Authority  
  A trusted third party that issues certificate which can be used by individuals or organizations to verify their identity or credentials. Certificates generally contain an entity name, their public key, an expiration date, a serial number and identifying information about the certificate authority including their digital signature.
 
  Ciphertext  
  It is the text that is impossible to read without having a key to unscramble the information to its original readable form.
 
  Commercial Online Service Provider  
  It is a company that provides access to the Internet in addition to its proprietary content and services.
 
  Communication Software  
  It is a program used in transferring data from one computer to another through a modem or a network.
 
  Common Gateway Interface (CGI)  
  A server-side communication standard supported by all web servers for accessing external programs.
 
  Cookie  
  It is a small information file that is transferred from a web server to your web browser to be stored and accessed on your computer. There are several types of cookies and they are used for many different reasons depending on the web site that you are visiting. One of the most common reasons for a web site to send you cookies is to remember who you are and your preferences for certain kinds of information. Only the site that sends you cookies is able to read them.

  It is the practice and study of encryption and decryption – encoding data so that it can only be decoded by specific individuals.

Certificates are the digital equivalent to a passport or a driver’s license and are used in applications where higher levels of authentication are required and where passwords may be either insufficient or inconvenient.
 
  Digital Signature  
  A digital signature is an electronic identifier that can be amended to electronic documents or transactions. It serves three main purposes – it provides authentication, non-repudiation and integrity – and any attempt to alter the information would be detected.
 
  Disk Operating System or DOS  
  A system which tells a personal computer how to work.
 
  Download  
  It is the process of transferring / receiving files from one computer to another using a modem.
